Buckingham Palace
The Buckingham
Palace is the home of the queen. It is at the Green Park and at the Buckingham Palace
Gardens. It is in the City of Westminster. By the way, Hyde Park is near the
Buckingham Palcae. Tourists can visit this big building in the summer.
This building has
775 rooms with very cool rooms, for example a room for a piano. They’re rooms
for the royal family. Some of the rooms were decorated by the Belgium king.
But a big building
needs many guards. The guards of the queen have big, black helmets, red
uniforms and black trousers. They’re not allowed to do anything. You can tickle
them with a feather and they are not allowed to laugh!
The most famous person,
who lives in Buckingham Palace is the queen! She is a very old woman and she is
the most exciting person in England. She can give anyone the title of the
knight, when this person does very good things for the country.
Big Ben
The following text has information about Big Ben. As first we want tell you that Big Ben is in England. Often people name the tower with Big Ben although the clock is Big Ben. Now the tower of Big Ben is renamed into Elizabeth Tower which is 315 feet (96.0 m) high. Big Ben weighs 17t.
The tower was completed
in 1858. The pendulum is installed within an enclosed windproof box sunk
beneath the clock room. The clock is very interesting. It is 13 feet
(4.0 m) long, weighs 660 pounds (300 kg) and beats in a 2 second
rhythm every full hour. The clockwork mechanism is in a room below and weighs 5
tons.
On
May 10th 1941, a German bombing raid damaged two of the clock's
dials and sections of the tower's stepped roof and destroyed the House of Commons’
chamber.London Sights
